Written 11-plus
Used by schools such as Alleyn’s, Emanuel School and Putney High, this is the ‘traditional’ 11-plus test, comprised of:
- Comprehension section
- Creative writing section
- Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Maths (GCSE level)
New tests
Some schools are changing their entry assessments. Wimbledon High School, for example, only sets verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests, and a creative, problem-solving task. They’re no longer specifically testing English and Maths.
Consortium exams
These exams have changed for 2019, with a new approach designed to test the innate ability of students, rather than focusing on academic subjects.
Tests will most probably comprise a multiple-choice, paper-based exam, covering similar topics to the ISEB Common Pre-Tests – such as reasoning, English passages and maths. They will no longer include a long, written section.
Common Pre-Test
Linked to the Consortium exams, these tests are multiple choice and adaptive, covering the following topics:
- Verbal reasoning – common words, antonyms, word combinations, letter transfer and number codes
- Non-verbal reasoning – shape analogies, classes like and horizontal codes
- English – reading comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation
- Mathematics – candidates are assessed on National Curriculum topics taught up to the end of Year 5
